A family-run shop which has been part of the fabric of the high street for nearly 40 years is closing down.

Rolls and Rems, in Edmonton Green Shopping Centre, has been a thriving part of the area, supplying material to people, schools and companies.

But now the lease is up and the owners, Janet and Bruce Felby, have decided to close it down.

It first started as a kiosk on the high street but in 1977 it moved into a proper shop.

Enfield Independent:

Mr Felby said: "The customers have been the best thing about this shop. We'd like to thank all the people who have remained loyal to us over the years.

"We feel very sad about shutting down, it's like the end of an era.

"It's been part of our lives for so long it will be difficult not to imagine going there every week."

The manager, Sue Whitbread, has been with the shop for 20 years and was given high praise by her bosses.

"She's been fantastic," Mr Felby added.

Enfield Independent:

In the meantime, the chain's other branches in Holloway and Lewisham will remain open.

But the couple, who have three children, are looking forward to having more time on their hands and looking after their grandchildren.

Mr Felby added: "It's been a very varied 40 years. It's not been a 9am to 5.30pm job, it's been very hard work, but very enjoyable."
