A new art exhibition at Walthamstow’s Vestry House Museum reveals the history of Epping Forest and the hidden stories that have shaped its landscape.

The works in The In-between: An Ode to Epping Forest by illustrator Rachel Lillie are based on the artist’s walks through the Forest. Lillie’s wistful drawings of tree formations, grasses, colours, natural forms and unique compositions will be displayed alongside hand carved “artefacts” made from fallen wood from the Forest.

Together they explore the space between knowing and unknowing, the past and the present, and image and artefact.

The In-between: An Ode to Epping Forest is a companion exhibition to Gayle Chong Kwan’s The People’s Forest, currently on display at the William Morris Gallery on Forest Road.

Rachel Lillie is a London-based illustrator and Senior Lecturer in Illustration Animation at Kingston University. She studied BA Illustration and Animation at Kingston University and MA Visual Communication at the Royal College of Art, graduating in 2012. In 2014 Lillie was the first Illustrator in Residence at House of Illustration. Her work explores the local natural landscape to reveal overlooked narratives.
