There is déjà vu in Mr Musey’s latest anti-cycling/pro-car letter (‘Should we spend £41m on cycling’, Opinion, May 27), so it’s worth reiterating a couple of non-trivial response points.

This is not about current levels of adults and children using bicycles, but rather part of the UK’s investment planning for a more cycle-friendly future; and the money is not something our Enfield council can spend elsewhere, rather if there is no agreed Cycle Enfield scheme then Transport for London, as primary investor, will simply not pay up.

A spin-off from this proposed TfL investment in Enfield would be the upgrading of various community hubs across the borough, many long since needing attention and with no realistic prospect of financing from alternate sources.

As for opinion rather than fact, the letter has much of it. One is that the most exhaust-polluted part of a road is indeed inside the vehicle; this being due to the concentration of fumes from the cars in front building up inside the enclosed space. There is supporting evidence. Then to question that cyclists as a group live longer; yes, once again research is clear on this point, even after discounting the increased injury risk.

More specifically, it is not the ‘cycle lobby’ who have said “ride a bike and live longer”, rather a plethora of cross-party, cross-sector and various planning reports over the past years. Mr Musey has valuable input to this complex project, but readers will by now know his prejudices, so best he now focuses on facts. We can guess the rest.
