Councillor Chris Bond’s vision of massed cycling in Enfield is flawed because when it comes to choice between a bicycle and a car, the car wins every time because of its versatility. That is why there are 37 million cars on the roads and residential streets are full of them. That is why it will not be possible to put cycle lanes in residential streets without removing residents’ cars and cycling risk will remain as present.
Cllr Bond’s change in presentation to allow residents first choice of view is putting the cart before the horse and is a waste of time and money when he has council traffic experts at his side to advise on what can and cannot be done. For example, surely they are aware it will be very difficult to put two-way cycle lanes along Green Lanes between the A406 and Alderman’s Mill. Do they not have advice to give on other pinch points?
With regards to the council’s budget, are we being mislead about shortages when they can supplement a £30million grant with £11m that could be spent on other services?
