I live in a council-owned block of maisonettes and last month a family moved in but before they did they stripped the house from top to bottom. They took out the kitchen, bathroom and the toilet, redecorated the property and even painted the outside of the downstairs windows.

The block was better five years ago, but we have had a lot of problems with plumbing and electrics. I wanted to have mine checked so found an electrician but he told me I needed permission from Enfield Borough Council before he could come. So I couldn’t have it checked. So why can this family come in and do all that work and no one say a thing about it?

I got in touch with my local councillors and nothing is to be done about it. I also sent a formal complaint to Enfield Homes and they haven’t got back to me yet. Is this why our housing list is so long?

A few years ago, Enfield Homes said they had to check all tenants to make sure that all the people that should be living in the property were there. I let them check and so did another person I know, who is a pensioner like me. We later found out that we were the only ones that they checked. Is this the way things work now – we do as little as possible and hope for the best, nevermind the rules.
