I am writing in response to a letter written by Councillor Savva (‘We inherited a broken Britain’, Opinion, November 19), which was a reply to my letter the previous week (‘Council deserves a doctorate in hypocrisy’, Opinion, November 12).

I would point out to Cllr Savva that my original remarks concerning the near bankrupt country that the present Government took over at the last general election, was at no one else’s bidding but reflected my own concerns that, due to past record, if his party once again took over the economy of the country, the present Europe-beating recovery would be halted and the old irresponsible overspending and over-borrowing would return with dire consequences.

However, there is more to be done and all actions must be equitable to all. His comments constitute the familiar and discounted party rhetoric of self-justification. If my views are questioned, why, immediately after Labour lost office, the note from a senior treasury official stating that ‘all the money had gone’, and why the selling by Chancellor Brown of a vast amount of our gold reserves at rock bottom prices.

Clearly, wrongly and sadly, Labour does not acknowledge the true position, the near mortal damage to the economy whilst in office, leading to the present cuts, whilst it does accept its harmful and complacent attitude towards immigration.
