Enfield Borough Council has informed Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt and the NHS that it will take legal action surrounding the closure of Chase Farm Hospital’s accident and emergency ward.
A decision was made at the Clinical Commissioning Group on Wednesday, September 25 to shut Chase Farm Hospital’s accident and emergency and maternity wards in the Ridgeway, Enfield by December 9.
In a statement, the councol said it had formally written to the NHS and the Secretary of State for Health telling them it would challenge the closure through judicial review.
The authority said pre-conditions for the unit's closure laid down by former secretaries of state in 2008 and 2011 have not been met.
Without "satisfactory responses" from the proposed defendants, the council said it intends to issue proceedings next week.
