"The owners story"

We were looking to relocate out of central London and we had fallen in love with Harpenden as an area. It wasn't easy to find a home that fit our specific brief being within a very short walk of the station but in a peaceful environment. When we first saw Embers we knew instantly that the position was perfect as it sits just off the high street right in the centre of town as well as being a totally residential road of established detached family homes.

The potential of the house jumped out at us from the start. We were used to large open plan living spaces and wanted to create a hub for our home that reflected this. We remodelled the downstairs rooms to open up the majority of the downstairs where the kitchen dining family room sits. This area is nearly 40' deep and 20' wide. We worked with a specialist kitchen designer to achieve a high end specification and to best utilise the abundant space. We love how the kitchen centres the area with the large island running up the middle of the room. This has created zones which can be used for dining, entertaining and relaxing accentuated by the large glazed windows and doors at both ends which access the large frontage and private rear garden. There is also a more private but still generous living room with fireplace for those cosy winter evenings. Upstairs the four bedrooms were ideal for our family. The main bedroom is a fantastic size with large ensuite shower room and there is a further ensuite to the guest bedroom which has been ideal for visiting family and friends. There is also a great loft space which if we were staying in the house we had always thought we could convert to additional bedroom space.


We have the best of all worlds living in Kirkdale Road. It is hard to believe that such a tranquil road can be as close to all that Harpenden has to offer. We are spoilt for choice with a plethora of restaurants, gastro pubs and boutique shops being right on our doorstep. A five minute stroll from our quiet road, takes you either to the wide open spaces of Rothhamsted Park or Harpenden Common. The sporting facilities the town offers are superb including four golf courses, tennis clubs and a brand new sports centre.

One of the main benefits was the outstanding schooling provision. There are a number of independent schools to choose from but for us the exceptional state provision is hard to beat anywhere in England. St. George's Secondary School (Comprehensive school of the year in 2019) and Roundwood Park infant and Secondary Schools are all close by. Easy access for commuting to London, national and international travel has always been essential for us. The town's station is right in the town centre providing the Thames link service to central London in under 30 minutes. The M1 (junctions 9 & 10) and M25 are within easy reach with Luton and Heathrow conveniently within a short drive.
