I read with interest the article ‘Beating the burglars’.
My son and I took a day trip to France on December 6 last year and returned at 1am to find the back door had been forced open and the safe jemmied off the wall in the bedroom.
The perpetrators had chipped a two-inch channel down the wall adjoining my back door.
Of course they turned everything out of the drawers in the bedrooms, but the sad thing is that all my precious possessions were in the safe.
One blessing was we had our passports and currency with us.
We had left a timed light on in the house, but of course they could have come in during the day and none of my neighbours heard anything. The car was also not on our forecourt.
I had a visit from the crime prevention office and have now had a burglar alarm fitted, but I do not think we can be too clever in preventing a break-in. If the thieves want to get in they will regardless. They also burgled a neighbour across the road at the same time.
