Don’t let EU destroy our precious Royal Mail

THE Post Office was a popular, effective and profitable state monopoly in this country until the EU passed directives in the 1990s to open it to competition.

This has so far enabled private companies to cream off the easier to handle and more profitable bulk postings, leaving the Royal Mail with the more difficult and costly part of the business.

Now, at just the time that the worst face of private enterprise has landed us all in such a giant financial mess, Lord Mandelson is talking of the further break-up of the state backed Royal Mail, offering part control to the Dutch Post Office.

Does this continue until the postal service is as big a disaster as the banking system, just to keep our masters in Brussels happy?

London UKIP MEP Gerard Batten’s booklet on the cost of the EU to Britain calculates that the net cost to the UK was about £56billion in 2008.

This is equivalent to more than £900 net for every man, woman and child.

We have bought more from our EU partners than they have bought from us to the tune of more than £380 billion since joining.

This would be great generosity in years of plenty, but in these troubled times it seems like folly.

Still the leaders of the main political parties (but not necessarily their followers) assure us that it is in our best interests.

I admire the way they all keep such a straight face when doing this.
