Australia off-spinner Jason Krejza picked up eight wickets on his debut as India were bowled out for 441 on day two of the fourth Test.
Krejza, overlooked for the first three matches of the series, finished with superb figures of eight for 215 from 43.5 overs.
Australia lost key opener Matthew Hayden before tea - the Queenslander run out attempting a quick single to Murali Vijay at mid-on - but Simon Katich (18 not out) and captain Ricky Ponting, unbeaten on seven, steadied the ship as the tourists reached 43 for one at the interval.
