Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino believes his side have beaten one of the best teams in Europe after they brought Chelsea’s 13-match winning run to an end.

A pair of headed goals from Dele Alli gave Spurs a well-deserved 2-0 win against the league leaders at White Hart Lane and Pochettino praised his players’ performance against strong opposition.

The win takes Tottenham up to third in the table, two points behind second place Liverpool and seven adrift of Chelsea.

Pochettino said: “We are very pleased because for me the most important thing was that we showed great character and we were very competitive.

“Maybe that was a problem last season that we miss to compete in a better way.

“To be competitive means to play like we did today, sometimes suffer, but play a good team in Chelsea, I think one of the best team in Europe today, a team with confidence.

“I think it was a very solid performance and that made me very proud of the players.”

Alli opened the scoring for Spurs in stoppage time at the end of the first half when he rose highest in the box to head home a floated Christian Eriksen cross.

The pair combined again 10 minutes after the break when an almost identical ball into the area from Eriksen allowed Alli to nod past Thibault Courtois in the Chelsea goal for a second time.

The win ended The Blues' hopes of completing a record run of 14 straight Premier League victories.

Pochettino also reaffirmed comments he made in an interview with Spanish media this week, in which he called Dele Alli the most promising English player of his generation.

Alli is in blistering form and his brace against Chelsea means he has now scored seven goals in his last four games.

The manager had told news agency EFE the midfielder was the “most important” player to have emerged in the English game over the last two seasons.

He added: “Dele Alli for me he is one of the best English talent that appear in the last two year or one year-and-a-half and he has shown he is a big talent and has application.

“But it is not only him we can talk about Harry Kane or the other young players that have the potential, it is not only Dele it is many, many English players.”
