Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has said he will value both competitions the club are left in with equal respect.

His side defeated high-flying Italians Fiorentina 3-0 with notable ease on Thursday night, going through to the Europa League last 16 4-1 on aggregate.

Pochettino said that his team would now focus on their Sunday game against Swansea City in the Premier League, but that they wanted to win both at home and in Europe.

He said: “We have two competitions, and they are both important. We have to show we respect both competitions. Prioritise either – why? We have three very important games in the Premier League, then the first leg in the Europa League, but we focus on each game as important.”

Pochettino did lament the yellow card given to Dele Alli for diving. Alli, who was the most impressive player on the pitch for Spurs and was given a standing ovation when substituted off, will now miss the first leg of the Round of 16 game.

He said: “I think like you, and all the people in the stadium, it was not a yellow card. It was a foul for us. It means we will miss him for the first leg of the next round.

“But now that is not important, as we have him for a lot of games. We have three very important games in the next week, we must be ready for all of them.”

Absent from the squad was Harry Kane with injury. Pochettino said he hoped the England forward would be back in the team by the weekend, but heaped praise on the rest of his squad for their level of performance without the talismanic striker.

He said: “I will always speak about the team and squad. It is true that Harry Kane is very important for us, but today it was impossible to have him in the squad. I was very proud of the players’ performance today.

“Our mentality is always to play our best in each game. We have a very good position in the table, I don’t need to explain anything or motivate them, because they are in a position to win games. It is an exciting period for us.

“Now we need to rest and recover and get ready for Friday and Saturday. Kane was on the training ground today, running and doing some exercise, we are happy. We will see if he is ready for Sunday tomorrow.”
