Tottenham Hotspur have released striker Emmanuel Adebayor by mutual consent this morning after he was left out of Mauricio Pochettino’s 25-man Premier League squad.

The 31-year-old Togolese had been in negotiations to end his Spurs stay prior to the transfer window closing.

However, as he has been freed since the window shut on September 1, Adebayor cannot sign with another Premier League club until January.

Initially captured on loan from Manchester City for the 2011/12 season, Adebayor scored 17 league goals for Harry Redknapp’s side.

That form persuaded the former Spurs boss to spend £5 million to bring the rangy striker to White Hart Lane on a permanent basis the following summer.

But the former Arsenal and Real Madrid forward never hit the same heights again and instead mustered just 18 league goals in the next three seasons.

A brief renaissance under Tim Sherwood during the 2013/14 season yielded 11 top flight goals in just 20 starts but he could not follow that form up once Pochettino was appointed.

Twice granted compassionate leave by the Argentine last term, Adebayor fell down the pecking order at White Hart Lane to the point his number ten shirt was taken away and re-assigned to Harry Kane this summer.

In total, Adebayor scored 42 goals in 101 outings in all competitions for the north Londoners. His last appearance for the club came as a late substitute against former club Manchester City in May.
