Tottenham Hotspur winger Andros Townsend was unable to repeat the impact he made on his last England outing as the Three Lions laboured to an instantly forgettable goalless draw against Ireland.

The Leytonstone-born wideman came off the bench but could not find a winner for Roy Hodgson's side, despite looking lively following his introduction.

Townsend had marked his last outing for England, against Italy in Turin, by coming off the bench to fire home a stunning equaliser in March's friendly meeting.

Spurs teammate Ryan Mason had been called up but pulled out due to injury.

England will hope for improvement when they travel to Slovenia in a 2016 European Champiomships qualifier in a week's time.
