Kyle Walker is targeting Champions League qualification as Tottenham Hotspur look to put their Capital One Cup final defeat behind them.

Spurs lost 2-0 to Chelsea at Wembley this afternoon, with deflected goals from John Terry and Diego Costa ensuring the first trophy of the season heads to Stamford Bridge.

Walker says there wasn’t much to separate the sides and believes the match was settled by a “sucker punch”.

He said: “It’s the way of football – there’s always going to be one loser in the final. Today we didn’t really get the rub of the green.

“Both goals are sloppy. If we came in here and were talking about (Eden) Hazard scored a 40-yarder or Diego Costa took on ten people and banged it into the back of the net, you can take your hat off to them. But two deflections, it’s a sucker punch.

“It’s two deflected goals, it’s not Hazard taking on countless people and putting it into the back of the net. And that was all that separated both teams, really.

“It’s a young bunch of lads in there and we have to pick ourselves up. We’ve got a job to do for the rest of the season and hopefully there are many more finals to come.”

Sitting in seventh place in the Premier League, six points off the top four, Walker says the team must now focus on their 12 remaining games and the prize of a place in the Champions League next season.

“We can only take one game at a time,” he said. “If we keep winning games and people drop points behind us, then it’s going to put us up there. We just need to keep doing what we’ve been doing in recent weeks. We’ve been fantastic, the work ethic we’ve shown, the desire, the passion, throughout the team. Even the lads who have come off the bench, it’s been fantastic to play with them since I came back from injury, and hopefully we can keep doing the same and we’ll see where it ends up at the end of the season."

Tottenham now haven’t won in since they beat Arsenal 2-1 on February 7, including a Europa League defeat to Fiorentina last Thursday, but Walker says the team can now show the rest of the league what they are capable of, beginning against Swansea on Wednesday.

The England international added: “They’ve been tricky fixtures, but we’ve got a good run of games, starting with Swansea on Wednesday. Swansea should come to White Hart Lane looking at what we’ve done today and hopefully will be on the back foot a little bit, so hopefully we can take the game to them and show the Premier League what we can do.”
