Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas on derby defeat to Arsenal at Emirates stadium: 'We deserved a draw'
Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas denied his summer signings suffered from a lack of integration during their 1-0 derby defeat to Arsenal at Emirates stadium.
Spurs started with four of five new players eligible for selection in today’s match as well as later introducing the club's latest capture Eric Lamela.
But the visitors were outplayed through much of the game and Olivier Giroud’s first-half tap-in proved enough to see the Gunners to victory.
One of the new signings Etienne Capoue was stretchered off with what Villas-Boas later said was a nasty looking fibula injury following a tackle with Tomas Rosicky.
The defensive midfielder was later seen being lifted into an ambulance outside the ground but Villas-Boas said he could not yet confirm the extent of the damage.
Speaking after the match, the Portuguese boss said his team deserved more: “The fair result would be a draw, bearing in mind what we did in the second half.
“The first 25 minutes Arsenal were very strong, it was difficult initially for us to control their pace in the game but as soon as we managed to control the possession we started creating and we finished the first half on top.
“The second half was all ours so great credit to the players for putting them under pressure and for really pushing Arsenal against their goal but not with enough clear cut chances for us to get that 1-1.”
Spurs have spent in the region of £110million during this summer’s transfer window to replace last year’s star player Gareth Bale, whose world-record £85.3million move to Real Madrid was confirmed after today’s match.
But Villas-Boas denied his team were lacking creativity without the Welsh winger. He said: “I think it is a false question, I don’t think that is a good argument. We came to Arsenal and created lots of chances. Obviously there are players that are different from others, some are more creative and have that ability to link up others.
“You can reach success through different types of players. I think we have the ability in our squad and we just have to choose the right strategy for each game.”
