CRICKET: Early collapse seals Exiles' demise
NORTHAMPTON Exiles were unable to follow up last week's opening day victory with another success as they crashed to a nine-wicket defeat at to Redbourn in Division 4 of the Saracens Herts Cricket League.
The match was effectively decided in the first ten overs as Exiles collapsed to 11-6, an early run-out being followed by a couple of wickets for Jamal Ahmed (3-30) and three for Jon Fleming (3-24).
Despite a good knock from Abdul Ghaufar(34no), who received support from Paul Frost (14) and Harit Patel (15), Exiles were able to improve the situation only marginally, eventually being dismissed for 76 as Darren Bassill (3-14) gave support to the opening bowlers.
A keen display in the field brought only one consolation wicket for Exiles, Kasim Shamim (1-10) inducing a slip catch from Chris Yorath (21).
However, Simon Osman (37no) saw Redbourn to 77-1 without any real alarms.
Exiles 2nd XI could blame their failure to force a victory over Letchworth 4th XI in their Division 10 clash to a number of dropped catches.
Letchworth showed little inclination to chase a target of 243-4, having inserted Exiles, and closed on 101-7.
In a consistent batting display, Amit Naik (81) shared good partnerships with Bernie Bower (30) and Tyrone Lawler (43) before Shaun Lawler (57no) accelerated the Exiles innings.
In a varied attack, Ian Montague (3-39) met with most success for Exiles.
Exiles 3rd XI kept up their winning form in Division 12 with a four-wicket victory over Hemel Hempstead 5th XI.
Exiles dismissed their opponents for 104, Darnesh Patel (3-8), Saeed Haider (2-34) and Shahzad Sheikh (2-14) being the main wicket-takers.
And then they showed enough consistency with the bat to run out winners at 107-6.
Faisal Javed (33) and Saeed Haider (16) made a useful start before Jamal Butt (18no) clinched victory after a middle-order wobble.
