Ignatians' Colts edge out Clapton

THE Enfield Ignatians’ colts side warmed up for this weekend’s crucial league encounter with Ealing with an absorbing home win over Upper Clapton, writes Jonathan Landi.

It was a hard-fought tussle between the side and Ignatians' coach Steve Corcoran said: “It was just the sort of tough test we needed before the Ealing game.

"I am delighted with the win, although Upper Clapton played their part and it proved to be our toughest test of the season."

Ignatians raced into a 6-0 lead after Jack Wilson successfully stroked over two penalties, only for the fly-half to leave the field injured before half-time.

Although his replacement Jordan Wilson ensured a seamless transition, the hosts had to endure the frustration of two disallowed tries from impressive debutant Calvin Joseph (obstruction) and the explosive Gavin Rees (foot in touch).

The pill became even more bitter to swallow after Upper Clapton fashioned a try of their own to get within sniffing distance at 6-5.

Upper Clapton’s running-style continued to cause Ignatians problems after the interval, although a defensive mix-up in the red and white ranks enabled Hadee Fayaz to score a 70-metre interception try which gave the hosts a 11-5 lead.

But Upper Clapton weren’t finished yet. They scored in the final minute and could have sneaked a win had the conversion sailed wide.

Corcoran added: “I was pleased with the form with a number of players. Dan Hayes performed really well after his injury, and Chris Langan and George Barker worked tirelessly in the forwards.”

Ignatians Colts: H Fayaz, G Rees, T Hollister, D Hayes, C Joseph, J Wilson (J Wilson), N Sanders (C Boyce), J Northcote, C Langan, G Barker, E Barker, L Horn, D Brooks, J Mateo, B Stowe.
