JOHN Fernandes shot a superb second round of 69 to win the Enfield Golf Club Junior Open for the first time.
Competing against players almost two years older than him, the 16-year-old shot a two-over 74 in the morning to lie one shot behind the leader.
However, a three-under round in the afternoon of 69, including five birdies, saw Fernandes win by three shots.
Fernandes was the only player to finish under par on a tricky course.
And to prove his 69 was no fluke, he matched that score in the Junior Medal before shooting a five-under 67 in the Midweek Medal.
Fernandes also played in the recent Scottish Boys Under-16 Championships where he was lying joint 13th out of 120 players after solids scores of 73 and 71, when the final day was cancelled due to torrential rain and gales.
Having seen his handicap drop to 2.3, Fernandes is continuing to push hard towards the season’s key objective of making the England under-16 squad.
