Enfield Borough re-wrote their record books as they scored eight goals without reply against a Bedford team that were playing their final match of the season.

The visitors were struggling to put out a side and by the end of the game they looked as if they would rather be anywhere other than The Queen Elizabeth Stadium for the South Midlands Division One clash.

The visitors mounted a couple of attacks without troubling Elgi Fejco in the Enfield goal while his Bedford counterpart parried a Tage Kennedy free-kick from 35 yards.

Enfield went closer to opening their account when a Bruno Tavares cross was met by Kennedy, but the keeper managed to block his goalbound effort from close range.

But Tavares did make the break through when he ran onto a pass and his shot bobbled across the goalkeeper into the far corner of the net.

The second-half deluge was started by Kennedy, whose smart turn in the box created space for him to turn and centre, the ball entering the net off the leg of an unfortunate defender.

Jamiah Plentie-Lawrence then tried his luck from 35 yards, the keeper parried the shot but only to the lurking Tavares, who gratefully converted.

Although manager Marvin Walker made three substitutions, the pressure on the Bedford goal did not relent.

Kennedy was the next scorer, notching his 30th goal of the season as he outpaced the visitors’ defence before side-footing past the stranded keeper.

Goal five was created by two of the more experienced members of the squad as substitutes Ade Wale and Aaron Archer combined, the latter’s shot was blocked but Tavares was on hand to complete his hat-trick.

Kennedy’s pace was causing Bedford endless problems and his cross found Wale in the penalty box. Rolling back the years, Wale skilfully back-healed the ball into the path of the supporting Gideon Sarpong, who scored his first goal for the club.

By now it was merely a question of how many Borough would score, but the next player to net was probably the oldest in the club’s brief history.

Kennedy was again the creator and his cross was controlled and slotted home by Wale for his first goal for the club, much to the amusement of his teammates.

The final goal was a combination by Tavares and Kennedy, the former attacked down the left-wing and crossed into Kennedy. His mishit shot bounced up onto the crossbar off the keeper’s arm but it dropped perfectly for Tavares to nod home.

Just before the final whistle the visitors had a rare shot on target with an effort from fully 45 yards which was straight at Fejco, who was grateful of something to do as the club kept their first clean sheet in 23 games dating back to early December.
