Up-and-coming Enfield table tennis player Denise Payet says she learned a huge amount from being part of the England squad at the ITTF Team World Cup in London.

The 16-year-old was one of three teenagers in the England squad at the Copper Box Arena.

She did not get a chance to play as England, who qualified as hosts and were the lowest-seeded of the 12 teams, were knocked out of the group stage.

A 3-0 defeat by third seeds Hong Kong was followed by a 3-1 reverse against sixth-ranked Singapore, but Payet says she will take a lot from being around some of the best players in the world, including the all-conquering Chinese team, who beat second seeds Japan in the final.

“It’s been really great,” said Payet. “The atmosphere was amazing and being in the arena with all the crowds supporting us and having that experience was great.”

Payet featured alongside Tin-Tin Ho, Kelly Sibley, Maria Tsaptsinos and Charlotte Bardsley in the squad and all except Bardsley will represent England at the Commonwealth Games in Australia in April.

The Enfield teenager added: “The girls fought really hard and hopefully we can come across Singapore at the Commonwealths and beat them.”

The competition was won by China for the 10th time, beating Japan 3-0 in the final.
