A 3-0 victory over St Neots Town Reserves ensured Enfield Borough capitalised on the weather-enforced inactivity of their Spartan South Midlands League Division One rivals to move up two places to second in the table.

With the other teams in the top four all having their games postponed, Borough took full advantage of their Saturday afternoon off to play one of their matches in hand over their title rivals.

There were two changes in Enfield’s defence from the midweek 4-1 win over Langford, with Treci Bambi and Lenny Labiche replacing the unavailable Sivi Bao and Brian Tshibangu in the starting XI at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium.

When the teams met in Cambridgeshire five weeks previously, Borough were quickly out of the blocks and 4-0 ahead inside 16 minutes en route to sealing a 6-1 victory.

The visitors were much better organised on this occasion and adopted a similar approach to that of Langford, giving Borough little time on the ball to settle into their normal fluent passing game.

Chances were at a premium, with St Neots’ only shot on target during the entire match coming after three minutes when keeper Elgi Fejco fielded a weak shot from 25 yards.

Borough’s sole goal-bound effort in the opening half came six minutes later when Tage Kennedy played the ball through to Richard Ennin, whose shot was palmed around the post by the St Neots keeper.

Kennedy was involved in the vast majority of the chances the hosts created, combining well with his fellow forwards, but none of them troubled the keeper.

The deadlock was eventually broken five minutes after the interval when a foul on Solomon Nwabuokei resulted in a free-kick. Jamiah Plentie-Lawrence delivered the ball into the heart of the penalty area where Nwabuokei met it firmly with his head to make the breakthrough.

It was the same combination who doubled the lead seven minutes later. Plentie-Lawrence took advantage of a fortunate ricochet, ran to the bye-line and his low cross was prodded home by Nwabuokei.

Enfield went in search of more goals, with Nwabuokei turning provider with a low centre which Ennin lofted over the bar, while Thomas Opoku worked some space for himself inside the box before shooting across the face of the goal.

The final goal of the game was scored in the 78th minute when Alfie Hatch’s pin-point through ball set Ennin free. Getting to the ball ahead of the keeper, Ennin poked the ball goalwards and Opoku was on hand to apply the finishing touch inches from the goalline.

Borough now face a difficult run of three away matches in the space of eight days before Christmas, starting with a visit to FC Broxbourne Borough on Saturday followed two days later by a trip to Haringey to play Brimsdown.
