Enfield Town stayed sixth in the Ryman Premier League on Saturday after their 1-1 draw away at Hendon.

The first half hour of the game was a cagey affair with neither team troubling the opponents’ goalkeeper.

Billy Crook found the back of the net from a Tyler Campbell cross but it was ruled out for offside.

Nathan McDonald pulled off a double save before the end of the half and Campbell could have made it 1-0 but his low shot was comfortably saved by home keeper Darren Behcet.

In the second half, Hendon’s Sam Murphy crossed from the left to Karl Oliyide but the forward’s header was directed straight at McDonald.

It was the home side who broke the deadlock when a Hendon player picked up the ball in midfield.

Mark Kirby brought him down in the penalty box and Sam Murphy stepped up and sent McDonald the wrong way.

Harry Ottaway could have scored the equaliser but his shot was blocked by a defender.

And after 64 minutes it could have all been over when Karl Oliyide was given space on the edge of the area but his shot curled wide of the post.

Town kept pushing to level the score and had a good opportunity when Campbell raced onto a long ball over the top of Hendon’s right-back and surged into the box.

His shot was blocked by Behcet and the hosts’ defence managed to clear.

Town’s pressure finally told on 77 minutes following an attack down the right side of midfield.

The ball found its way to Mickey Parcell, in the middle of the field a few yards outside the penalty area, when he had his path blocked by a body-check.

Crook duly stepped up and converted the subsequent penalty.

It was a good week for the Towners after they defeated Staines Town 2-1 last Tuesday.

Town took a while to get into their stride with the visitors having the upper hand for much of the first half.

The Swans’ Brandon Adams tested McDonald as early as the third minute and at the other end Campbell got ahead of Tom Day for his shot to be saved by Jack Turner.

McDonald was beaten in the 32nd minute when Tommy Brewer picked the ball up and cut in from the left unleashing an impressive strike from distance.

Town went into the second half a goal behind but looked the livelier of the two and were awarded a free-kick when Scott Shulton was brought down.

Tom Collins curled the ball around the wall and past the goalkeeper to make it 1-1.

Just seven minutes later it was 2-1 to Enfield when Campbell cut into the box from the left and his shot was parried away by Turner.

But Parcell was on hand to gleefully sweep the ball home. Needham Market will visit Enfield on Saturday afternoon.
