Enfield Town earned a hard-earned point against Tonbridge Angels in the Ryman Isthmian League Premier Division after falling a goal behind in the first half.

Angels had the upper hand from the outset and shortly after Nick Wheeler swung in a cross after five minutes which needed to be cleared by Harold Joseph.

It was not long before the visitors took the lead. A raid down Town’s right-hand side produced a deep centre from Wheeler and this time Luke Blewden had time to control and slam the ball home at the back post.

The Angels could have doubled their tally on the half-hour mark when Alex Akrofi found himself beyond the Town back line and with only the goalkeeper to beat, but Nathan McDonald dived low to make the save.

Enfield’s Billy Crook almost scored an equaliser in the 34th minute but the ball flew wide of the post, their best chance of the half.

Town came out early for the second half and soon set about getting back on terms with a much more cohesive spell.

Four minutes into the final 45, Jon Muleba’s shot was comfortably saved by Anthony di Bernardo and Tyler Campbell fired narrowly off target as Town upped the intensity.

The Towners may have been forgiven for thinking it wasn’t to be their day when sub Dernell Wynter burst through and rolled a shot agonisingly against an upright with 15 minutes left.

Scott Shulton looked to follow up to try and open Enfield’s account from the rebound but was also unable to convert the chance.

But they eventually got their break when the game entered its closing stages with Tonbridge’s defending becoming more and more frantic as the game wore on.

At the death, due to added on time, skipper Mark Kirby came to the home side’s rescue when he pushed forward in the last few minutes and managed to force the ball over the line from a corner.

Tonbridge’s Jack Parter attempted to clear the ball but Kirby’s goal was enough to rescue a point for the hosts.

Enfield Town faced Staines Town at the Queen Elizabeth II Stadium last night with a 7.45pm kick off in a league match.

Staines sat sixth in the table, only a point above Enfield who were ninth as the Towners looked to push into the play-off spots.

Town has two games in hand over their opponents as they look to gain promotion.
