Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino rued his side’s inability to convert chances into goals after they slumped to a first league defeat of the season at Chelsea.

Tottenham enjoyed a larger share of the possession and created more chances than their London rivals at Stamford Bridge, but lost the tie 2-1.

Pochettino insisted his team did not deserve the defeat, which ended their unbeaten start to the Premier League season, but admitted his players needed to be more clinical.

The Spurs manager said:  “I think we played well for 44 minutes but we concede a goal, a great goal from Pedro, but we played very well.

“Sometimes in football it is difficult to explain when you concede two goals when I think you have been better than your opponent.

“But today this is easy to explain because they were clinical in front of the goal and we were not.”

Spurs took the lead through a long-range strike from Christian Eriksen early on, but were pegged back by an equally impressive effort by Pedro on the brink of half time.

Chelsea looked more dangerous after the restart and took the lead on the 51-minute mark through the rejuvenated Victor Moses.

Pochettino was quick to dismiss concerns over his team’s form following the defeat, just four days after they were dumped out of the Champions League by Monaco.

He added: “I have no concerns about anything, I think after that game you only need to feel proud, the performance was brilliant.

“We came from Monaco, which was tough, to go out of the Champions League, the answer of the players was clear, good mentality, good performance.

“I think we were better, if you analyse the 94 minutes. But football you need to score and you need to defend well in your own goal and if not then what happened on the pitch today happens.”
