Kevin Wimmer says Tottenham Hotspur are in a strong position to push on despite his own goal helping Arsenal to a 1-1 draw in Sunday’s north London derby.

The Austrian tuned into his own net to gift the Gunners the lead in his first Premier League start of the season before Harry Kane levelled from the penalty spot.

The 23-year-old is eager to move on and help Spurs end a run of four straight league draws when they face West Ham United after the international break.

“Obviously to score an own goal is a bad feeling. At first, you are disappointed but once the game gets started again you want to turn it around,” he told the Tottenham website.

“We obviously got the draw, but we now have some time until the next game and I think we’ve turned the corner.

“We’re moving in the right direction and everyone believes we can continue to improve.

“Now we have some time while the internationals are on, then we’ll do everything to get the three points against West Ham.

Wimmer has been used sparingly since arriving at White Hart Lane in May 2015 His inclusion in the starting line up at the Emirates, therefore, represented somewhat of an acid test for the defender.

The draw saw Spurs extend their unbeaten start to the Premier League season to 11 games, and Wimmer revealed his delight at being selected for such a vital match.

“It’s always a good feeling to be in the starting line-up, especially for a game like this, I always try to give my best,” he said.

“It was a typical derby, lots of intensity and everyone tried their best. We tried to get the three points and we were unlucky.”

The visit of West Ham next Saturday is a mouthwatering fixture to return to as Spurs host their London rivals.

The Hammers are a point above the relegation zone but inflicted a 1-0 defeat on Tottenham when the sides last met in March.
