Tottenham Hotspur’s quintet of England stars missed out on the opportunity to claim top spot in their Euro 2016 group as they drew 0-0 against Slovakia.

The result was still enough for the Three Lions to secure safe passage to the knockout stages in second place.

Only Eric Dier started the match in Saint Etienne as Roy Hodgson opted to leave out Harry Kane, Danny Rose, Dele Alli and Kyle Walker from his starting XI.

Both Kane and Alli were introduced as England chased a late winner which would guarantee their place at the top of group B.

Walker, who was one of England’s top performers in the first two matches of the tournament, and Rose played no part in proceedings and were replaced by Nathaniel Clyne and Ryan Bertrand.

Wales’ comprehensive 3-0 win over Russia, in which former Spurs man Gareth Bales scored his third goal of the tournament, saw them usurp England at the top of the table and secure a supposedly easier last 16 opponent.

England will now face one of Austria, Hungary, Iceland or Portugal in the first knockout match of the tournament next Monday.
