Enfield Ignatians claimed their first away win in London Two North West this season after a 34-18 win at Woodford on Saturday.

Prior to the game Enfield had the dubious distinction of being the only side in the division not to have won on the road this season.

However, the side’s away day blues were banished in one fell swoop following a comprehensive victory which boosted their standings in the table.

Ending a barren spell of four consecutive league defeats, Ignatians were up against it for most of the opening quarter of the contest at Woodford.

The combined efforts of Woodford’s Tom Redfern and James Page whisked the home side into a 10-0 lead, which certainly could have been greater granted better finishing.

Slowly but surely, Ignatians’ superior forward firepower began to take its toll on Woodford and, with the tight eight in a real mood to impose themselves, two tries from dynamic number eight Wes Warren, either side of a Woodford penalty, underlined the strength of the fightback.

In imperious form with the boot, fly-half Jake Bates converted both touchdowns and added a further penalty as the blue and golds edged 17-13 in front at the interval during an entertaining contest.

There was no let-up in the second period.

Further tries from man-of-the-match Alex Harris and winger Hadee Fayaz, combined to a further seven point haul from Bates, ensured that Enfield Ignatians’ first league away win of the campaign came gift wrapped with a much-needed bonus point.

Captain Keir Bonnar said: “It took us half an hour to get in the game but, when we did, we won some nice clean balls and were far more composed in the red zone.”

Ignatians, having successfully negotiated two rounds of the Intermediate Cup, host Fullerians in the next round of this competition at Donkey Lane on Saturday afternoon.

Tries from Alex McCall and Rondell Bernard were but mere consolations in the great scheme of things as the seconds suffered a 42-10 defeat to a strong Hertford IV outfit in Herts-Middlesex Merit Table.
