Enfield Ignatians conceded a late penalty after falling to a 15-14 defeat at Tabard in London Two North West on Saturday.

Ignatians responded to Tabard’s first try with a five pointer of their own after prop Steve Taylor forced his way over from close range.

Jordan Wilson, having earlier missed a very kickable penalty, added the extras to make it 7-7 at half-time.

Tabard had the edge in the second half, and their more effective kicking game and ability to stick to a simple but effective game plan saw left winger Rhys Lewis go over in the corner for his brace. Ignatians can feel a little aggrieved though as the final pass went forward.

The visitors responded with a catch and drive try, and following some excellent work from second-row Rob Wyer, number eight Wes Warren made the all important final breach. Wilson added the extras as Ignatians edged 14-12 in front.

A failure to look after the ball cost Ignatians dearly and, after second row Aaron James-Nicholls was sin-binned for a swinging arm in the tackle in the final minute of normal time, Tabard were handed a very kickable penalty opportunity. Jack Reilly landed the kick and broke the visitors’ hearts.

Coach Ali Cook said: “Despite our injury woes, I thought Tabard deserved to win.

"We served up a poor imitation of the rugby we aspire to play.

"We were far too disjointed, our patterns of play were simply weren’t good enough, and we didn’t play enough good rugby.”

It doesn’t get any easier for Ignatians as they face one of the division’s top seeds, Hammersmith and Fulham, at Donkey Lane on Saturday.

The seconds fared much better and landed a 29-5 win over Finchley seconds in Herts-Middlesex Merit Table Two.

Tries from Stuart Blemings, Paul Winship, Kieran Glennon, Andy Roper and Seyi Adeosun sealed the win. Paul Duke added two conversions.

Ignatians thirds were also on the money after securing a 22-17 win over Chesham seconds in Herts-Middlesex Merit Table Five.

The blue and golds scored three tries and also added two conversions and a penalty from the boot of Dave Conlan.

Ignatians Under-18s have yet to be beaten in Herts-Middlesex Division and they wrapped up their fourth league win in as many matches after the 51-10 demolition of Fullerians B.

Josh Bell (three), Lewis White (two), Daniel Hooke (two), Alex McCall and Alex Bucknall all crossed the line.

The Under-15s suffered an agonising 15-5 defeat to the Bank Of England in Herts-Middlesex Division Four.

The game was tantalisingly poised at 5-5 with ten minutes remaining before the visitors sealed the win by adding a two further tries, Ignatians Under-14s eased to a 40-10 win against their Harrow.

Ben Phillips (four), Jack Cook-Smith and Jamal Daley-Bonner all played their part in the six try rout with Ryan Loo adding five conversions.
