Mauricio Pochettino was impressed with the way Tottenham Hotspur reacted after going a goal down inside the first minute against Bournemouth on Sunday.

Spurs hit back immediately and ended the match comfortable 5-1 winners at the Vitality Stadium and the Tottenham head coach praised the players’ response to Matt Ritchie’s early strike.

The Argentine told the club website: “For me it’s the way we reacted after we conceded the early goal, the mentality was strong and the way we played, we pushed hard, put them under pressure and after that, we were clinical in front of goal.”

Pochettino had spoken of the need for focus after Spurs threw away a lead at Anderlecht in the Europa League in midweek and the irony of conceding early was not lost on the former Southampton boss.

He said: “It’s always the same in football, when you speak about something - and we said 'we need to be focused’ - then ‘bang’, you know something will happen.”

Meanwhile striker Harry Kane, who has had a slow start in front of goal this season, took to Twitter to express his delight at scoring a hat-trick: “Great result today. Buzzing with the hat-trick”.

Kane told the club's website: “It was one of the best performances we’ve had.

“We haven’t lost in the Premier League since the opening day of the season - confidence is sky high.”

Kane’s goals take him to four for the season and Spurs fans will be hoping the hat-trick signals a return to form from the England forward.

Spurs will also be encouraged by the performance of right-back Kyle Walker. Walker won 67 per cent of his challenges on the south coast and was singled out by BBC Pundit Garth Crooks for his dominant display.

Crooks told BBC Sport: “Kyle Walker was impressive against City in the 4-1 win last month and even better against Bournemouth. The full-back is playing with so much confidence at the moment it’s scary.”

The defender has struggled with injuries over the last couple of seasons but now looks to be fully fit and has halted talk of his potential departure after the arrival of former Burnley full back Kieran Trippier.

After Ritchie scored within 45 seconds Kane converted a penalty on nine minutes after being felled by Bournemouth keeper Artur Boruc.

Further goals from Mousa Dembele and Erik Lamela, after some suspect defending from the home side and poor handling by Boruc, meant Spurs went in to the break 3-1 up.

Kane then finished off a great team move to make it 4-1 before more generous goalkeeping from Boruc gifted the striker his hat-trick.

The result puts Tottenham up to sixth in the Premier League and they now have a break before facing Aston Villa next Monday night.

Villa, who sit bottom of the table, have not won since the opening game of the season and recently sacked former Spurs manager Tim Sherwood.
