Enfield Ignatians made a winning return to the London Two North West division after fighting back to defeat Hampstead 26-17 at Donkey Lane on Saturday.

Trailing 17-16 with a couple of minutes remaining, tenacious Ignatians won a penalty after Hampstead were penalised for holding on and fly-half Jordan Wilson’s excellent strike from 30 metres out, allied to Tom Huckle’s converted interception score, sealed the win.

Ignatians led 11-7 at the break after Wilson rifled over two penalties and winger Hadee Fayaz squeezed over following a sustained period of pressure.

The Blue and Golds extended their advantage to 16-7 early in the second period when they scored a very well-taken team try and, with Ignatians successfully farming the blindside, some excellent approach work by Wes Warren successfully set up flanker Jack North.

Ignatians’ failure to press home their advantage almost proved very costly. Hampstead roared back and with centre Daniel Dimoline crashing over, and dangerous full-back Peter Wood completing his brace, they threatened to turn the game on its head. However, the hosts had other ideas.

Coach Ali Cook said: “The most important thing for us was the win. At times we panicked a bit and our decision-making was poor as a result of taking our foot off the gas. However, all credit to the team as they never gave in. We didn’t fold, and never gave in, and ultimately deserved the win.”

Ignatians are away to Welwyn in the league on Saturday.

The seconds lost 19-3 to Fullerians seconds in their opening encounter in Herts Middlesex Merit Table Two.
