Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane opened his account for the 2015/16 season by scoring as England routed San Marino 6-0 to become the first team to qualify for next summer’s European Championships.

Kane, who had not previously scored in four Premier League fixtures for Spurs this season, got the fifth with 13 minutes remaining to wrap up a comfortable win for Roy Hodgson’s side.

He had come off the bench just before the hour mark after England manager Hodgson elected to start Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy up front alongside captain Wayne Rooney.

It was Rooney, inevitably, who got the ball rolling with a 13th-minute penalty to equal Sir Bobby Charlton’s record of 49 goals for England.

A Cristian Brolli own goal doubled the lead on half an hour before Ross Barkley grabbed a third a minute after the restart.

Arsenal forward Theo Walcott nabbed two in the space of ten minutes with the second coming 60 seconds after Kane’s second at international level.

The 22-year-old scored his first England goal against Lithuania at Wembley in March and was winning just his third cap for the Three Lions after starting a friendly draw with Italy in Turin.

Kane’s Tottenham teammate, Ryan Mason, was an unused substitute.

Next up for England is a home clash against Switzerland at Wembley on Tuesday evening.
