Watford Water Polo Club Seconds started their league campaign with a comprehensive 20-10 (5-3, 6-2, 4-1, 5-4) home victory over Enfield on Sunday.

The match, the first of the London League Division Two season, was fiercely contested between the two rivals and featured three members of Watford’s junior side.

But it was not all plain sailing for the home side as Enfield started on the front foot and found themselves 2-0 up inside 50 seconds. Rob Threadgold’s well-executed lob shot preceded Rob Lucas’ effort to give the away side early momentum.

But an early set-back was exactly what Watford needed to spring into action and goals from Andy Holt, Sam Carling and Danny Davis put Watford ahead, taking a 5-3 lead into the break.

The middle two periods were dominated by the home side as an onslaught of attacking play, featuring excellent work by Cami Baker and Holt, left Watford 11-5 up at half time and 15-6 in front at the end of the third.

The game was all but gone for Enfield but that did not stop them fighting tooth and nail in the fourth period. And the visitors managed a valiant four goals, only to be undone by further efforts from James Warman, Dan Kattan and Danny Davis, reaching the 20-goal mark through junior player Joey Gardner-White.
