Enfield & Haringey's Chinjindu Ujah insists he is fully focused on being crowned Europe’s fastest man after pushing veteran sprinter Kim Collins all the way at the Sainsbury’s Indoor Grand Prix.

The 20-year-old rising star has shown his prowess in recent weeks after he was crowned national champion in Sheffield earlier this month.

And he showed no signs of wilting under the pressure when he lined up against one of his idols at Birmingham’s Barclaycard Arena on Saturday.

Ujah kept his nerve as both Daniel Bailey and Michael Rodgers were disqualified for false starts and then clocked 6.55 to finish second – 0.5 seconds behind former world champion Collins.

And Ujah says that the performance has given him huge confidence as he prepares for next month’s European Indoor Championships in Prague.

“It was 0.2 seconds off a PB so I'm really happy with that, especially after those two false starts because after the first one I got a really good start,” said Ujah, who was speaking at the event in Birmingham, which sees Sainsbury’s act as the Major Event Series partner of British Athletics.

“But to come back and reset after two false starts is good and I'm really happy with that and it's something that I'll take to Prague.

“My expectations going into Prague are what any sprinter would be it's to win the championships so I'm going to go there and race well.

“I haven't really raced against any of the top guys in the world this year so to come here and race these guys I'm really happy.

“I really wish I was a bit closer to Kim Collins and I kind of saw him half way and realised it was too late but he's a legend and I respect him.”

While Ujah will turn his attentions to conquering Europe he admits he has one eye on the World Championships in Beijing later this year, not to mention the Rio 2016 Olympics.

“I don't feel any pressure and I feel like right now I'm running free and I just want to keep that going,” he added.

“I'm really happy because this time last year I was injured so to come now and be healthy and put some really fast races together for my outdoor season is really positive.

“Beijing and Rio are the two main things that I'm building towards but I want to take it one step at a time and concentrate on qualifying for Beijing.”
