After claiming victory at the season-opening Sainsbury's Glasgow International Match, Enfield & Haringey high-jumper Chris Kandu insists he is ready to take on the world.

The 19-year-old jumped an indoor personal-best height of 2.23m at the Emirates Arena on Saturday which proved enough to see off the challenge of Scotland's Ray Bobrownicki.

It was a jump that gave Great Britain four valuable points at the meet – in the end, however, the Brits lost out by a single point to Germany.

But, while his team might not have won, Kandu was happy to have got his season off to a winning start.

And, with the World Championships in Beijing this summer fast approaching, the teenager is hopeful of securing a spot on the plane to China.

“It was alright for me. I didn’t necessarily want to come out with that jump, but to get the win was the most important thing and to get the points for the team,” said Kandu, speaking at the Sainsbury’s event – a partnership with British Athletics that builds on Sainsbury’s support for the 2012 Paralympics and recognises that sport can unite and inspire children of all ages and abilities.

“Obviously Ray [Bobrownicki] was close. I think if he had come along with me maybe I could have had more competitive spirit in me and jumped higher.

“But it was a great competition and the crowd were amazing. It was about me and my coach Fuzz [Ahmed] getting ready for British trials.

“We don’t want to do that many indoor competitions this year, so I think we will go to senior trials in two weeks and hopefully the Birmingham Grand Prix. Then I’ll go from there.

“In the summer hopefully I’ll get into a few diamond leagues, get onto the under-23 team and come away with a medal, and then maybe if I get the standards the selectors want I’ll get a spot on the plane for the World Championships in Beijing.”

While Kandu believes he has better leaps in him he knows that it's still early days in the season.

And he says for now he is just content to have enjoyed a boisterous Scottish crowd and is hoping to progress as the season wears on.

“It was kind of surreal. The crowd were amazing, so loud, so it as a great experience for me,” Kandu added.

“In terms of my own performance, I think I can jump way higher than that as I really felt good going into it.

“I think I have a lot more in me and I'm looking forward to the season and hopefully being able to show that.”
