Mauricio Pochettino dedicated victory to the fans after Spurs ran out 4-0 winners against Newcastle United in the Capital One Cup quarter final.

Goals from Nabil Bentaleb, Nacer Chadli, Harry Kane and Roberto Soldado secured the win, which booked a semi-final match against Sheffield United over two legs next month.

Tottenham will now go into 2015 still standing in four competitions, and the Spurs head coach said this latest result was an important performance, not only for the team but for the supporters too.

He said: “It’s a fantastic night – a very good performance. I’m very happy because this atmosphere and relationship between the team and the supporters was brilliant. I enjoyed it tonight.

“Maybe it was our best performance. Some games we played very well. This was important for us. It’s at home, in front of our supporters. We can go to the semi-final of the Capital One Cup. We know Tottenham is a very traditional Cup team and this victory is very important for us.

“What’s very important for us is we needed this victory and this performance for our supporters. Our players needed to feel this atmosphere and confidence and the supporters today were brilliant. I’m happy, I’m pleased for our players and for our supporters too because they deserved a performance like we showed tonight.”

Looking ahead to the semi-final, Pochettino said he is not yet dreaming of a Wembley cup final and instead, his side will show full respect to League One promotion chasers Sheffield United, who overcame Premier League side Southampton 1-0 to meet Spurs.

Pochettino said:“We need to have full respect for Sheffield United. It’s a team from League One but they deserve to be in the semi-final. But we need now to stop and be focussing on the Premier League. Saturday (against Burnley) is a very important game for us.”

England Under-21 striker Kane was on the scoresheet again tonight, making it 13 goals for the season.

“He doesn’t surprise me,” added Pochettino. “He’s still young but he showed his potential. We need to be careful with young talent like Harry and build him step by step. But when a player deserves to play, he plays. It’s not about name, it’s about performance during the week and in games, and if Harry deserves to play, we have no problem.”
