Enfield Ignatians picked up their first-ever victory over Rochford Hundred on Saturday by winning 12-3 at Donkey Lane on Saturday.

After seeing a Ryan Browne try controversially ruled out, Ignatians inched ahead 5-3 at the break after a close-range try from Richard Laurence cancelled out a successful penalty from Rochford's Adam Ashton for offside.

Laurence, a flanker by trade but playing out of position at centre, gambled that the defence would either fan out to the left or right, and it paid off as last season's captain barged his way through the middle.

Ignatians more than doubled their lead early in the second half. Scrum-half Charlie Shorten featured in the build-up, but the key component was a barnstorming run from left wing Browne, which sent the alarm bells ringing in the Rochford defence.

Heeding the cries of the supporting Tom Geary, Browne checked his run and released a scoring pass to the number eight. Jordan Wilson added the conversion as Ignatians never looked back.

Doing well to survive a sin-binning in each half, with Rob Wyer and later James Rawlinson suffering temporary banishment, Ignatians' physicality continually rocked Rochford.

Coach Emile Hertz commented: "The players were challenged to believe in themselves for the full 80 minutes, and it's the best result since I've been here as coach. Our intensity and tackling was good and we got what we deserved."

Ignatians' seventh win from 11 games keeps them in seventh. They visit Braintree in the final league game of the year on Saturday.

The Fourths cleaned up 40-0 against Hackney Thirds. In a game which went to uncontested scrums from the start, the visitors lapped up the muddy conditions to run-in six tries - five of which were converted.
