Enfield Town forward Liam Hope did not realise he had become the club’s record goal-scorer when he netted against Margate, but always knew he would break the record.

Hope came off the bench against table-topping Gate to score his 107th goal for the Towners, breaking Rudi Hall’s previous record of 106, though it was not until afterwards he realised what he’d achieved.

“To be honest, I forgot until it was announced after they had kicked off again,” admitted Hope. “I was thinking more about the game against Margate and it was only after it really hit home.

“It has been nice. I have had a lot of nice messages from supporters and players – past and present – which has been nice. It has been a lot more [made of it] than I expected.

“I always knew I would break the record because I only needed a few this season and if I played, I would score them.”

The goal came late on against Terry Brown’s high-flying and big-spending Gate, and the result helped push Bradley Quinton’s Towners up to ninth place in the Isthmian Premier Division standings.

“It was a really good win for us,” agreed Hope. “We have been on a really good run which was ended at the weekend with a poor result and performance at Dereham. We have started to get more consistent and winning is becoming more of a habit – which is good.”

Hope has been at Enfield since 2009, following goal-laden stints with Didcot Town and North Leigh, and says he has a real affinity with the Towners: “I really love playing for the club and it is great to be recognised as the record scorer and to always be able to say I was the record scorer, because I am sure it will be broken at some point.

“It is a really friendly, family club and there are not many better clubs to play for.”
