Enfield Ignatians maintained their unbeaten home league record by comfortably beating struggling Old Cooperians 36-10 in London Two North-East on Saturday.

A dominant first-half performance following a brace of pushover tries from captain Luke Ellis and one from man-of-the-match Richard Laurence, after an excellent break, laid the foundations of victory in the form of a 17-0 lead.

Ignatians secured the bonus point in the 43rd minute when in-form prop Christo Kasabi forced his way over, and although Old Cooperians scored two quick tries, the home side finished the stronger following a brace from scrum-half Jordan Wilson. The latter also added three conversions.

Skills coach Steve Atkinson said: “We convincingly won the first half and, if anything, should have made more of our opportunities.

“We were playing up the hill, and into the wind, and a number of areas of our game worked well.

“I thought we rather took our foot off the gas in the second half when our target wasn’t to concede, and although Old Cooperians scored two tries in four minutes, we eventually pulled our finger out and won the second half 19-12 after Jordan Wilson twice went over.”

Up to fifth in the league after claiming a fourth league win in six games, this victory added to previous successes against Braintree and Campion at Donkey Lane this season.

Ignatians make the long trip to Norfolk on Saturday when they take on Holt in the league.

The Enfield Ignatians Seconds, down to 12 players in the second half as their injury toll mounted, lost 70-5 to Letchworth Seconds in Herts-Middlesex Merit Table One, while the Fourths gave a good account of themselves in a17-5 loss against high-flying Watford Seconds. Brad Smith was outstanding for Ignatians.

Enfield Under-18s entertained in their 22-15 win against their Chingford counterparts.

Charlie Hoy, Donny Noble (2) and Edward Chilton all crossed for the blue and golds, with the dependable Alex Bucknall adding a conversion.
