Enfield Ignatians returned to winning ways following a narrow 17-15 win over Campion on Saturday, winning the Danny Davies Trophy in the process.

Davies was a club stalwart and a coach-trainer in the old fashioned mould when Ignatians were based in South Woodford. He died in 1979 and, sometime before 1983, it was decided to create a trophy in his honour to be played between then then Old Ignatians and Campion.

After an arson attack on the clubhouse in 1995 - the trophy was the only surviving artifact. Taking the form of the new trophy, the challenge between the Enfield and Romford-based sides resumes in January.

The trophy had been gathering dust in the Ignatians’ clubhouse for the last decade after the two clubs were separated by a league re-structuring. However, following Campion’s promotion, it was up for grabs once more.

And it was Campion who made the brighter start, with the Ignatians unable to take advantage of promising field positions after receiving two yellow cards.

However, an excellent try from rookie winger Ryan Browne hauled the Ignatians back into the contest before the break, outpacing the defensive cover to touch down.

An improved second-half showing saw the Ignatians equalise when captain and hooker Luke Ellis went over to draw the hosts level.

A third sin-binning allowed Campion to maul the ball over the line, but Luke Stack went over from a five-metre scrum and saw his try converted by Jordan Wilson to secure the win seven minutes from time.

Skills coach Steve Atkinson said: "The big plus for us was the win. We didn't adapt to the sin-binnings or make the most of the elements in the second-half, but our defence was certainly a positive. However, I have to be happy with three wins (league) from four."

Ignatians are away to Saffron Walden in the league on Saturday.

The Seconds were comprehensively beaten 69-12 by unbeaten league-leaders Tring in the Herts-Middlesex Merit Table One. Anthony Clark and James Rawlinson scored the consolation tries, with Carl Anderson kicking a conversion.

The Thirds beat St Albans Seconds 22-19, scoring three tries - two converted - and a penalty.

Previously unbeaten, the Under-16s were beaten 19-5 by a strong Harrow side in the Herts-Middlesex Division Two, with Jack Allen the scorer.

Enfield Ignatians’ Under-13s came from behind to beat Hertford ‘B’ 17-12. Tries from Jamal Daley-Bonner (2) and Akin James sealed the win.
