The Evangelou brothers celebrated winning their first titles on the same boxing show after a memorable night at York Hall on Saturday.

Enfield’s Andreas Evangelou got the evening off to an ideal start when he landed the vacant international masters light-heavyweight title after a convincing points win over Ivan Stupalo.

Younger brother Chris followed him afterwards but managed to overcome a major setback in his welterweight title bout after breaking his hand in the opening round. A brave performance saw Chris defeat Zoran Cvek on points to complete a great night for the family.

Andreas said: “Everyone is really proud of us and we are both really happy now that the pressure is off. To get two titles on the same night was great for our fan base and also our family.

“It was not nice to see Chris break his hand but he showed how skilful and classy he his with his footwork to win with one hand.”

Andreas was up against the third ranked Croatian but the home fighter was in control during his first ten round contest.

He said: “It’s a stepping stone for me and puts me 15th in Great Britain. This has put me up there with the big boys which is where I feel I belong.

“Normally I like a tear up but I had to be patient in this fight because he is an awkward opponent with his style. I was on the front foot throughout the fight but it was hard to get the killer blow. It was a bit frustrating but I won every round so can’t complain.”

Chris will not return to the ring this year after the injury he suffered in his title fight. But Andreas will regroup after a fortnight’s break and look to have another contest at the end of the year.
