Frank Buglioni felt he gave the ‘spiteful’ performance he was aiming for after his sixth-round stoppage against Alexey Ribchev (18-10-1) at York Hall on Saturday, but believes there is more to come.

The Enfield fighter (14-1) left his Bulgarian opponent with a bad cut above his left eye, enough for the referee to call the fight off after two minutes and 11 seconds of the sixth round.

Looking back on the win, he said: "It was a fantastic training camp and I learned a hell of lot but there were only glimpses of things that I learnt during the fight.

"I was very pleased with the performance but there is a lot of pressure joining Paschal (Collins) and Steve Collins and I was very pleased with the end result and the overall performance.

"Myself, Steve and Paschal had all spoken and we had said: ‘We are going to go and do a spiteful performance.’

"We went out there to grind him down; to hurt him at range and when he started to soften up, to work him over and let a few more shots go. But the main thing was to put him onto the back foot early and then just hunt him down, cut the ring off and then the stoppage was going to come."

And Buglioni, 25, who spent five weeks in Dublin in preparation for the fight with new trainer Steve Collins and his brother Paschal, felt the benefit of his Irish training camp.

He explained: "Getting away just focuses your mind and your body because you are only away to do one thing and that is work on the boxing. It makes you very single-track minded, focused and determined but it also makes you hungrier and hardens you up as well; being away from home and the environment you are comfortable in.

"Every day is a fight in that gym and there is no-one there to give you an easy ride; they are all coming there to take over your crown and make a name for themselves. You need that competition; it was like a jungle out there and we are all fighting to be the best."

Asked what he felt he had improved upon under the tutelage of Collins, Buglioni said: "There are little things that we are tweaking: footwork and the defence, but we are working on the power, aggressiveness and the mindset as well.

"It is quite a lot of different things that are being improved but I would say mainly the mindset and the defence."

The ‘Wise Guy’ will return to the ring on the undercard of the Derek Chisora-Tyson Fury re-match at the ExCel Arena on November 29.

Buglioni has fought at the ExCel once before but admits being part of a bill which includes the Chisora-Tyson grudge match will be special.

"That is a massive card and it is going to be a great night," he enthused. "That is what boxing is all about and that is why I’m in the game: I love the sport. But that adrenalin and that buzz of being in a 16,000 arena absolutely full to the brim of noisy supporters is going to be something special and live in the memory for a long time.

"They are the nights that you train hard for."

He added: "I have topped the bill at York Hall and the Copperbox a couple of times now but the ExCel is another step and that is the way I want to go; just keep improving and keep winning and get some major titles under my belt."
