Enfield Town player-manager Bradley Quinton says he is not enjoying having to come off the bench to play but feels his side are starting to realise their errors.

The Towners recorded consecutive successes and clean sheets by winning 2-0 at Leatherhead on Saturday, thanks to goals from Mitch Hahn and Corey Whitely.

However, former Braintree Town utility man Quinton brought himself on as a half-time substitute - the third time he has done so since succeeding former boss George Borg at the beginning of September.

"I am not enjoying it to be honest, because I keep coming off the bench and doing things that we have got to do," said Quinton. "We have spoken about discipline and games where you are getting yellow cards and injuries thick and fast [are not ideal].

"Saturday was a perfect example: with injuries, I am having to come on and slow them down. They are starting to realise what they are doing wrong, seeing their mistakes again.

"My coaching staff have been fantastic working behind the scenes. The boys are starting to realise their own jobs, our tactics and that how we play each week is not the same."

Quinton was quick to praise his side’s work ethic and will to improve though - even after a fourth win in six since taking up the reins.

He said: "We had a chat at half-time, after the game and on the coach on the way home as well, and we were speaking about [improving] things. They are slowly starting to understand how we should play and our strengths and weaknesses.

"They are doing well; they are listening and I can’t ask for any more really. Their work-rate is fantastic as well, when we have not got the ball. If you get a team doing that, their ability should shine through if they are good enough to be part of your team, which they are. It is looking good."

Scoring goals has not proved a problem for the Towners, who have only failed to hit the back of the net in three Ryman Premier Division fixtures this term, but defensively there has been cause for concern.

However, after recording shut-outs against Felixstowe & Walton United in the FA Cup first qualifying round last weekend and at Leatherhead on Saturday, Quinton feels his side are turning a corner.

He explained: "The worrying thing, if there was one, as a manager is if we weren’t creating chances but we have been creating numerous amounts of chances and just not taking them.

"Then you go down the other end and teams seem to get one little chance from our mistake and they punish us. So we have worked on that in training and the players have held their hands up again and said: ‘You are right, this is costing us’ and if we start taking our chances and are resolute when we have not got the ball, the mistakes will stop."

Quinton will also be running the rule over a number of trialists on Wednesday, after a trialists match originally scheduled for last week was cut short by a power failure.

"After 16 minutes the floodlights went so we didn’t see much," laughed Quinton. "It has been re-arranged for this Wednesday. I had a good 18 players down, so it was disappointing really.

"I have got people and agents ringing me the entire time saying: ‘I could do this or that’ and I don’t really want to tinker and make massive changes; I don’t need to, because the boys are doing well.

"Everything in football now is a squad game and the work ethic of players is down to them. It is in their hands really, if they want to be a part of it."
