Margaret Adeoye insists it is now all systems go for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games after recording a morale-boosting victory at the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games.

Having turned her attentions from the 200m to the 400m this season, Adeoye headed to a specially-built stadium on Horse Guards Parade to compete in a 100m B race ahead of Glasgow 2014.

But Adeoye wasn’t there to simply make up the numbers, crossing the line first in 11.61 seconds to take the victory and the scalp of Olympic 4x100m relay gold medal winner Bianca Knight from America in the process.

The 29-year-old now turns her attentions to the one lap race, having been selected to race individually at Glasgow 2014 and in the 4x400m relay for next month’s European Championships in Zurich.

And Enfield & Haringey sprinter Adeoye admits she is now feeling better about her assault on those major international podiums after rediscovering her speed at the iconic Horse Guards Parade.

“I don’t quite remember the race, I just remember working to the line as I could see it was a close one and Bianca Knight was really working,” said Adeoye, who hopes to compete throughout the Summer Series – events proudly backed by long-term supporter Sainsbury’s.

“I was using this for speed because the Commonwealths are coming up and I have the 400m and my coach [Linford Christie] tells me I should be confident going into it but I am just battling with my speed.

“I am just not feeling as rapid as I used to. I wasn’t that quick to start with but I feel even slower now.

“But my coach got me out here for confidence reasons and speed work and it is good and I have been really consistent this season which is good.

“The Commonwealth Games is going to be very challenging for me. It is going to be completely different from the 200m.

“I have run quite a few but I still haven’t got it right. I have either gone off too slow, too fast or messed it all up.

“So I am just hoping I can get it all right because I am in good shape and I haven’t been able to get it out yet but hopefully I can at the right time.”

Also playing their part as the Anniversary Games celebrated two years since the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics on Horse Guards Parade and The Mall was sprinter Chijindu Ujah.

Going up against the likes of former world champion Kim Collins and two-time Olympic gold medal winner Nesta Carter was always going to be difficult, and Ujah finished fourth with American Michael Rodgers grabbing the win.

However Ujah’s time of 10.13 was the second fastest he has run since going sub-10 seconds last month, and the 20-year-old Enfield & Haringey sprinter was delighted to be able to test himself against some of the best in the sport.

“I felt my middle phase of my race could have been a lot better so I will go away and work on that,” Ujah said.

“I just want to get some racing going and carry on getting some experience and push towards some good times.

“I am just looking to get some experience because I want to get to the World Championships in Beijing next year.”
