Tottenham Hotspur trio on pitch amid ugly scenes following England Under-21 qualification
7:18pm Tuesday 16th October 2012 in Sport
Tottenham’s Danny Rose was sent off after the final whistle as England Under-21’s qualification for the Euro 2013 Championships was marred by ugly scenes following their 2-0 aggregate play-off win over Serbia this evening.
Leading 1-0 from Friday’s first leg, a mass brawl ensued in Krusevac after Stuart Pearce’s young side broke downfield deep into injury time and Connor Wickham scored to secure his side’s place in next year’s finals.
It is being reported that Rose was dismissed after reacting to alleged racist abuse by kicking the ball away, while missiles and punches were also directed at the England players and staff.
Pearce subsequently confirmed England had reported racist abuse to UEFA following the post-match scenes.
Rose, who is on loan at Sunderland, had earlier been booked, along with fellow Spurs defenders Steven Caulker and Adam Smith.
The fourth Tottenham player in Pearce’s squad, Andros Townsend, was an unused substitute.
