Tottenham Hotspur’s Jermain Defoe on was target for England as the Three Lions defeated Euro 2012 runners-up Italy 2-1 in Switzerland.

The 29-year-old came off the bench to settle the game with a superb strike from the edge of the area.

Earlier this week it was reported that Defoe could quit Spurs if he found his first-team chances limited.

England manager Roy Hodgson has said that it is difficult to pick a squad when a lot of his players aren’t consistently always in the starting line-up for their clubs.

As well as Defoe, Tottenham players Kyle Walker and Jake Livermore also played with Steven Caulker an unused substitute.

Phil Jagielka had earlier equalised with a header after Daniel De Rossi had put Italy in front.

All four Spurs players will now hope they have done enough to be named in Hodgson’s squad when England kick-off their World Cup qualifying campaign against Moldova.
