Enfield-born Ben Maher helped guide Team GB to their first Olympic show jumping gold in more than 60 years to the delight of 23,000 strong home crowd this afternoon.

The team, made up of riders Maher, Scott Brash, Peter Charles and Nick Skelton, were involved in a dramatic Jump-off against the Netherlands.

Skelton, riding Big Star, got Team GB off to a superb start with a clean ride, only to be matched by Jur Vrieling for the Dutch.

Next was the turn of Maher on Tripple X, and he opened up a lead for GB with a clean ride, while his Dutch counterpart Maikel van der Vleuten picked up eight penalty points.

Brash was next to the plate, and he connected with a single fence, but luckily, his rival Marc Houtzager did the same.

This left Team GB in a commanding position, and Peter Charles sparked pandemonium in the crowd with his clean ride on Vindicat that ensured the gold medal.

The 29-year old, who represented Team GB in Beijing four years ago, can now add Olympic gold to his bronze medal that he collected in the European Championships in 2011.
