THE first league game after the Christmas break saw Southgate Hockey Club grind out a 1-0 victory over last year’s league champions Oxted.
The goal came on the stroke of half-time, after Kevin Haigh’s strike from the top of the D was repelled dangerously upwards by the goalkeeper and, from the resulting penalty corner, Johannes Kloess, playing against his former club, found the corner of the net with a straight drag flick.
This was a great open game for the neutral spectator, but the Southgate faithful had plenty of nerves in the second half, wondering whether the one goal would be sufficient.
Southgate came close to extending their lead on numerous occasions. Haigh had another fierce strike after a break-away and Matthew Wells very nearly turned in a ball across the D.
At the end of the game, the man-of-the-match plaudits were shared among the defence, who kept a clean sheet and chances to a minimum, despite tough pressure from the opposition.
