Rugby duo complete mountain challenge

ANDY Roper and Toby Rome, two members of the Enfield Ignatians’ rugby team, have helped raise more than £4,000 for charity as a result of successfully completing the gruelling Snowdonia Charity Challenge in Wales, writes Jonathan Landi.

This combines 40 miles cycling, the ascent and descent of Snowdon on foot, and canoeing.

The combined efforts of the two four-man Jackals teams is a welcome boost for the charity Regain, which supports people paralysed as a result of sporting accidents.

Roper said: “It proved a fantastic experience which was helped by the sunny conditions. The Jackals were one of 49 participating teams and we had the added bonus of finishing first after completing the challenge in 5hrs 19 mins.

“Our four-man team was also boosted by the presence of the Hathaway Brothers, Dave and Alan, and it was nice to know that all our hard training paid off. Our other team, the Jackals United, finished 19th overall.”

A firefighter by trade, Roper didn’t get much time to recover, as he was pressed into service to deal with flash flooding in Essex 48 hours later.
